Guidelines and requirements for arcade and pinball repair work

Columbus Pinball Club maintains a structured repair authorization program to ensure safety, quality, and proper maintenance of our equipment. This program provides members with the opportunity to contribute to the club while maintaining high standards.

Authorization Levels
Level 1
Basic Maintenance
Simple cleaning and basic adjustments
Requirements:
- Complete safety orientation
- Demonstrate basic tool knowledge
- Pass written safety test
- Supervised practice sessions (minimum 5 hours)
- Board member approval
Allowed Tasks:
- Cleaning playfields and cabinets
- Adjusting flipper strength (minor)
- Replacing light bulbs
- Basic switch cleaning
- Minor plastic replacement
Restrictions:
- No electrical work
- No major mechanical repairs
- Must work under supervision initially
- Report all issues immediately
Level 2
Intermediate Repairs
Mechanical repairs and component replacement
Requirements:
- Level 1 authorization for minimum 3 months
- Complete intermediate repair training
- Demonstrate mechanical aptitude
- Pass practical skills assessment
- Board member approval
- Minimum 20 hours supervised repair time
Allowed Tasks:
- Flipper rebuilds and adjustments
- Switch replacement and adjustment
- Plunger and ball launch repairs
- Basic solenoid replacement
- Minor playfield repairs
- Score motor repairs
Restrictions:
- No high-voltage electrical work
- No board-level repairs
- Document all repairs performed
- Use only approved parts
Level 3
Advanced Repairs
Electrical repairs and complex troubleshooting
Requirements:
- Level 2 authorization for minimum 6 months
- Complete advanced electrical training
- Demonstrate troubleshooting skills
- Pass comprehensive practical exam
- Board member approval
- Minimum 50 hours supervised repair time
- Background check for liability purposes
Allowed Tasks:
- Board-level repairs and troubleshooting
- High-voltage electrical work
- Display repairs and replacement
- Sound system repairs
- Complex mechanical repairs
- Preventive maintenance programs
Restrictions:
- Must follow all safety protocols
- Document all work with photos
- Use only approved parts and materials
- Report all major repairs to board
- Maintain repair logs
Safety Requirements
All repair work must follow these safety protocols without exception
Personal Protective Equipment
- Safety glasses for all work
- Gloves when handling sharp components
- Closed-toe shoes required
- Hair tied back if long
- No loose clothing or jewelry
Electrical Safety
- Always disconnect power before work
- Use voltage testers to verify power off
- Never work on live circuits
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures
- Use insulated tools for electrical work
Workspace Safety
- Keep work area clean and organized
- Proper lighting for all work
- Ventilation for soldering work
- Fire extinguisher nearby
- First aid kit accessible
Documentation Requirements
- Log all repairs with date and time
- Photograph before and after repairs
- Document parts used and sources
- Note any issues or complications
- Report unusual problems immediately
Application Process

Submit Application
Complete repair authorization application form
- Provide relevant experience and training
- List any certifications or qualifications
- Explain motivation for repair work
- Provide references if applicable

Safety Training
Complete required safety orientation
- Attend safety training session
- Review all safety protocols
- Complete written safety test
- Demonstrate basic tool knowledge

Supervised Practice
Work under supervision to demonstrate skills
- Complete minimum supervised hours

- Display good judgment and decision-making

Assessment & Approval
Board reviews and approves authorization
- Board reviews application and performance
- Practical skills assessment if required
- Final approval by board vote
- Authorization level determined
Important Information
Liability & Insurance: All repair work is performed at your own risk. The club maintains liability insurance, but members performing repairs assume responsibility for their work.
Authorization Required: No member may perform repairs without proper authorization. Unauthorized repair attempts will result in immediate suspension of repair privileges.
Time Commitment: Repair authorization requires significant time investment for training and supervised practice. Be prepared to commit to the process.
Team Approach: Even with authorization, we encourage working with other members when possible. Collaboration improves safety and learning.
